Sensational Stays: Stockbridge Lakes

There is only one bed and breakfast in Henry County, Georgia. For those who like a sensational stay with a bit of homemade hospitality, Stockbridge Lakes Bed & Breakfast suits the bill. Located 20 miles south of Atlanta, this retreat near the sprawling urban metropolis offers personalized charm and a boutique feel unlike anything else in the area.

Southern hospitality isn't a slogan on a sign but a lived truth at the Stockbridge Lakes B&B, from generously spread tables of morning fare made with local ingredients to porches perfect for watching the sunlight wander over water. This place is far enough from the city's bustle that you can hear the call of birds—or find a squirrel's lunch spot (check out the Bushy Tail Art Trail)—yet close enough for day trips into Atlanta. But, see below, there is plenty to do in Henry County, too!

Owners and innkeepers Anita and Marvin Johnson welcome guests to the Stockbridge Lakes B&B. They are the kind of people you take an instant liking to. After a good handshake, Marvin escorted me to my room, the Southern Living Suite. Maxed out for serious comfort, this room is equipped with a king size, four-poster bed and a jacuzzi bathtub. There is in-room coffee, but snacks and refreshments are also at a guest's convenience in a shared space near the dining room. Other rooms include the Southern Comfort (queen bed), and Southern Charm, which can be either a king or twin set up. The Southern Retreat occupies the entire lower level of Stockbridge Lakes B&B, with a queen bed and pullout sofa bed. The Retreat is perfect for extended family stays (of up to 5 occupants) and features a sitting area, gaming room with pool and ping pong, and a kitchenette and dining area. Stockbridge Lakes B&B recently opened The Cottage, a 1,026 sq. ft. residence with two bedrooms, two full baths, and a full kitchen. Take in the Georgia air on the rooftop deck overlooking the lake.

Part of the personalized charm, beyond welcome messages and crafted breakfasts, is how the Johnson's know the area and experience everything they recommend. I was lucky to ride along with the hosts when they climbed aboard a Vietnam era Huey helicopter for a ride from The Army Aviation Heritage Foundation & Flying Museum. There is nothing like this experience, so check out the foundation's website below for event dates and details. And there is so much to do in Henry County, from a visit to the NASCAR track formerly known as Atlanta Motor Speedway to set jetting filming locations from Stranger Things and The Walking Dead.
